Sample Lesson Plan
Day 1
*Ocean Cups (blue jello with gummy sea creatures in clear cup)
*Ocean Music Video
*While students eat their ocean cup, KWL on overhead
*Read the big book Magic School Bus Goes Into the Ocean from the library
*Ocean Life Book: Read pages 3-14 together and discuss as we go
*Students go back and reread pages 3-14 themselves
*Sea Critter Research Report: Students are given the rubric and outline of research - have them choose a sea creature by choosing one of the sea creature pictures.
Day 2
*Students read pages 15-30 in the Ocean Life book to themselves and then answer the “Ocean Life Quiz pages 15-30” paper on their own. Give page numbers of where to find the answers to those who are struggling.
*Work on research when they are done
Day 3
*Read the rest of the Ocean Life book together and discuss.
*Orally ask students some of the questions on the quiz and then have them complete the quiz. Give page number to answers for those who need it.
*Read through the play together. Have students choose their favorite 3 parts. They will find out tomorrow - hopefully get one of their top 3 choices.
*Work on research as time permits
Day 4
*Students get to enjoy Ocean Life to themselves. Finish up the end Ocean Life quiz.
*Practice reading the play parts in their groups.
*Work on research as time permits
Day 5
*In the comb bound book Ocean Life read and discuss pages 1, 2, 3, and 9.
*Have students complete the worksheets “Layers of Life” part 1 + 2.
*Practice play parts in their groups
*Work on research as time permits
Ocean Unit: Sea Critters Book
Day 1
*Read and discuss Sea Critters pages 4-13 as a whole group.
*Practice play parts
*Students make their scenery for the play parts when they have time
Day 2
*Finish Sea Critters book together and then have students complete the “Sea Critter search” (half sheet). Provide page numbers for those that need it.
*Practice play parts
*Work on research as time permits
Day 3
*Go through the comb bound book Ocean Life together.
*Students complete the activity sheets: “Playing it Safe” and “Find the Flounder”
*Practice play part
*Work on research as time permits
Day 4
*Review concepts learned in ocean unit
*Students complete “Final Ocean Quiz”
*Work on research
*Final play practice - perform to class
Day 5
*Students go to other classes to perform their play
*Finish up research and present to class
Watch the movie “Oceans” if time permits.
